Learn about the technique of casting at Geevor Tin
Mine’s make-and-take craft session on Monday 13th February.
As part of the mining attraction’s half term programme, visitors will get the chance to make their own imitation ingot and smelters mark.
Geevor’s Learning Manager Rebecca Gardner said: “Tin is mined as an ore and the process of smelting turns it into a hot molten metal, which would be cast into an ingot and stamped with a smelters mark. Visitors will get the chance to get their hands messy and make their own ingot and smelters mark out of plaster of Paris which they can take home.”
The ingot-making craft session will be available between 12pm and 3pm on Monday 13th February.
Elsewhere, there is the chance to listen to a fascinating talk on an aspect of mining history that really brings the site to life. Geevor Talks start at 12.30pm every day from Sunday 12th – Friday 17th February.
There is also the chance to have a go at the jobs men, women and children would have done at Geevor over 200 years ago. Hand drilling, hand barrowing and crushing rocks with a bucking iron were laborious and time-consuming tasks but visitors can get a flavour by having a go in the sessions from Sunday 12th – Friday 17th February from 1.30 – 3pm.
Geevor’s Hard Rock Museum will be open offering visitors an interactive learning experience as well as a chance to walk through the old mine workings and take a guided underground tour.
All activities are free with site admission and do not require prior booking. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult.
